Thanksgiving Deep Fried Turkey Recipe

Most people do not realize the terrible mess it makes, and the dangerous consequences that ensue by working in an enclosed space. I know the old pros like to take it outdoors and have a friendly game of horse shoes or washers while enjoying a cold one talking about the football games that are to be played later that day.

How to Deep Fry a Turkey:

You will need a completely thawed turkey, a couple gallons of oil, and a very large cooking pot. You can use canola, vegetable oil, but it is better if you use peanut oil. You will also need to truss the turkey, meaning you need to secure the legs, neck flap, wings and tail to the body of the turkey. Make sure that there is not any type of thermometer or device that will pop out on the turkey. It would melt into the oil, not a good thing.

To determine the perfect amount of oil you are going to be using, place the turkey in the pot and add water until the turkey is completely covered plus an inch or two left from the top. If you do not have any room for extra water you will need to get a larger pot. You will then remove the turkey and measure the amount of water left, and this is the amount of oil you will need to fry your turkey.

You will now dry and season your turkey, and make sure that your frying pot is completely dry. You can add any seasonings you like; I prefer to inject my seasonings directly into the bird. You can also add you cooking pot to your Stove Top and heat to make sure all water is gone before adding to your outdoor fryer heating source. Once completely dry you will add the oil to the pot and bring it to a temperature of about 375 to 400 degrees. Make sure that you are able to get a good read on the temperature. It may fluctuate a few degrees depending on the weather while cooking outside but it should not be that big a deal. You just want to make sure that you are cooking in a covered but ventilated are. If it is raining or snowing it will make your Turkey frying experience for a really bad day.

This is where it gets tricky. The turkey needs to be room temperature and dry. Turn off the burner when you put the turkey in. You are going to lower the turkey into the pot of very hot oil 400 degree oil. The oil is going to splatter some and you will need some Very Good cooking gloves. They sell different styles of racks to lower your bird into the oil at Wal-Mart, Lowes, and Home Depot. Just remember to very, very slowly lower your turkey into the hot oil. A good method here is dunking your turkey, and I do not mean cannon ball either. When you lower your turkey into the hot oil it will boil up. This is why I suggest turning off the burner or heat source when you do it. You may have to do this multiple times and then one time might do the trick. Just make sure that the oil does not overflow the cooking pot.

Once the bird is safely resting in the oil, turn the burner back on to get to a temperature of 350 degrees. At this point you can go take a breather. But don't wander too far because that turkey will be done soon. A deep fried turkey cooks at a rate of about 3 to 3 1/2 minutes per pound. A ten pound turkey should take 30-35 minutes. If you have a bio thermometer you will need to test the turkey for doneness. The internal temperature needs to read 160 to 165 degrees. Make sure you are testing between the thigh area, and not hitting a bone to get a correct read.

Remove the turkey from the oil when it's done. Do this slowly and after you have turned off the burner. Let the turkey drain a little bit and you're set to go. Let it rest for about 15 to20 minutes and then carve and enjoy this crisp and delicious bird.

Tips of Good Exercises

Summer means spending time with friends and families, barbeques, and the beach. What better way to look great in that new swimsuit than by getting in some simple and effective abdominal exercises. These exercises can be done in as little as 2-3 times per week by doing 20-25 repetitions of each exercise. For those of you who are more advanced, try some of these using a physio-ball or while holding a medicine ball. And remember that abdominal exercises are great for creating a strong core, but don't forget that cardiovascular exercise and a nutritious diet are best for getting those six-pack abs.

Remember to change up your workout routine every 4-6 weeks to keep things fresh. Your body is smart and will learn to become more efficient in the way it responds to the same old exercises, so change it up to keep from hitting a plateau. If possible, workout with a friend or coworker. Having someone to workout with will help push you and can help you get to the gym on those days when you're not feeling up to it.

Don't use the scale as your only measure of success. Often times with a workout consisting of cardio and strength training, you will be losing fat and gaining a bit of muscle. Muscle is more dense than fat, and so the scale may not show much improvement (and you may even have a slight weight gain). Don't panic, this is normal. A better, less objective measure of success is if you feel you have increased energy throughout the day and your clothes fit you better.

It's great that you're motivated to workout, but pushing it too hard early on only leads to injuries and a negative perception of exercise. Start out by working out 3 days per week with a combination of cardiovascular and resistance exercise. If you're just beginning, cardiovascular exercise can be done in as little as 15-20 minutes of walking, biking, or swimming. Strength training should comprise both upper and lower body exercises and if done correctly, can be completed in as little as 15 minutes. For Ease of Use Nothing Beats a Barbeque Gas Grill

As most barbeque lovers know there is an ongoing debate over which the best type of grill to own is; a charcoal grill or a barbeque gas grill. For many people nothing beats the smoky flavor of their favorite foods cooked over hot coals. And while it can be hard to dispute the charm and additional flavor of cooking over charcoal, there are some good reasons why using a gas grill is a better choice. There are people who like to barbeque all year round, even in the dead of winter. For those who are located more southerly this may not present as much of a problem because it remains relatively warm. But there are people farther north who think nothing of digging their grill out of the snow and firing it up on the coldest of days. This is where the gas barbeque grill comes in handy. No messing around with messy charcoal bags and waiting for the coals to get ready. With the automatic igniters on most gas grills these hardy souls can be grilling in no time. If you have natural gas service to your house you can even hook your grill up to that and never have to worry about running out of propane or charcoal again. You can convert a propane grill to natural gas with a conversion kit you can buy at any home improvement store. Although some people will disagree there is not much difference between the food cooked on a charcoal grill and on a barbeque gas grill. It my take a little getting used to the way a gas grill barbeques your food, but the ease of use will get you cooking your favorite barbeque recipes in no time.

You won't need the latest or the best gadget if you are as me, to add it to your list on campaign cooking equipments. The major point in leaning towards a camp is to free ourselves from the fast moving, hefty normal life to a peaceful location where there are no technology or electronic gadgets dumped as seen in the modern age. This is what a majority of the campers like us think. Camping is a great effort to enjoy the nature.

Good and acceptable camping cooking equipments are necessary for a trip to assure a perfect meal. The equipment should also be suitable for handling, in fact very convenient. There are various cooking equipments for camping that serve the purpose as well as provide a good meal. These equipments are dependent on the type of expedition we seek for. Steps To Cooking A Turkey

The most important thing to keep in mind is that a turkey takes a long while to cook through to the bone...and keeps on cooking once you remove it from the oven. Make sure to bake, braise or roast the bird at a high enough temperature to keep it safe to eat and don't overcook it. Don't leave your turkey in the oven to keep it warm while you get the rest of the dinner ready to serve. Take it out as soon as it's done, let it cool outside the oven for about 20 minutes and then carve away. You'll see the difference immediately when a turkey is prepared properly: the dark meat soft enough to break apart with a fork  -  the white meat moist and tasty. The secret is all in knowing how to buy and cook a delicious turkey! We're here to help you learn how to cook a turkey.

How big a turkey should you buy? You'll need at least 1 to 11/2 pounds of turkey per person if you're buying the whole bird, fresh or frozen. Of course, it's always best to go bigger. (After all, there are at least 50 ways to serve your turkey leftovers, including a winter store of turkey soup.)  How long to cook? Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C) then place the bird in the oven to roast.

A thought to consider--Great chefs suggest trying out your skills with a smaller bird before attempting to produce a holiday masterpiece. Like any other skill, perfecting a turkey recipe takes practice. Very few cooks can claim that their first turkey was perfect...but with every attempt you get more comfortable with what you're doing and the results keep getting better.

Simple steps how to cook a turkey:

Allow about 15 minutes of cooking time per pound  -  about 45 minutes per kilo unstuffed. It will take a bit longer, about 20 minutes per pound or an hour per kilo, if the bird is cooked with stuffing.

1. Preheat oven to 325. Remove the wrapper to see how much the turkey weighs and determine approximate cooking time. Remove the giblet bag and the neck from the turkey cavity. Wash the turkey inside and out and pat skin dry with paper towels.

2. Place turkey breast side up on a rack in a shallow (about 2 inches deep) Roasting Pan. Insert Meat Thermometer in thigh. Add 1/2 cup water to the bottom of pan, if desired.

3. Cover turkey loosely with a tent of heavy-duty Aluminum Foil. Roast the turkey until temperature in the thickest part of the thigh reaches 180°F. Cooking time will vary. For example, a 20 pound turkey will take 4 1/4 to 5 hours to cook, check the temperature on the thermometer after 4 1/4 hours.

4. Meanwhile, mix the stuffing or dressing. Place in a casserole and pop it into the oven during the last hour or so of roasting time.

5. Remove the foil tent after 1 to 1 1/2 hours of cooking time to brown the skin. Brush with vegetable oil to enhance browning, if desired.

6. A whole turkey is done when the temperature reaches 180°F. The thigh juices should run clear (not pink) when pierced with a fork and the leg joint should move freely.

7. Allow the turkey to set 20 to 30 minutes before carving to allow juices to saturate the meat evenly.
Note: Cooking times do vary. Why? There are many reasons - oven temperature may not be completely accurate, the turkey may be very cold or partially frozen, and/or the roasting pan may be too small which inhibits the flow of heat. The USDA highly recommends use of a meat thermometer to determine doneness of turkey. This is an important tool in learning how to cook a turkey.

Stuffed Turkey:
For uniform cooking results, the USDA recommends cooking the stuffing outside of the bird (see step 4 above) If you insist on stuffing the turkey, stuff loosely and follow the steps below.

1. See step one above

2. Mix stuffing and lightly fill cavity. Allow 1/2 to 3/4 cup stuffing per pound of turkey. It is safer to understuff than to overstuff the turkey. Stuffing expands during cooking. Refrigerate any leftover stuffing and bake in greased casserole during the last hour of turkey roasting time.

3. Place turkey breast side up on a rack in a shallow (about 2 inches deep) roasting pan. Insert meat thermometer in thigh (see Turkey Safety: Using a Thermometer). Add up to 1/2 cup water to the bottom of the pan, if desired.

4. Cover turkey loosely with a tent of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Cooking time takes longer for a stuffed turkey. For example, a 20 pound stuffed turkey will take 4 1/4 to 5 1/2 hours to cook.

5. Remove the foil cover after about 1 to 1 1/2 hours of cooking to brown the skin. Brush with vegetable oil to enhance browning, if desired.

6. A whole turkey is done when the temperature in the thickest part of the inner thigh reaches 180°F and the stuffing is 165°F. The juices should run clear (not pink) when a long-tined fork is used to pierce the thickest part of the thigh.

7. Check the internal temperature of the stuffing. Insert the thermometer through the cavity into the thickest part of the stuffing and leave it for 5 minutes. Or use an instant red thermometer which will register the temperature after 15 seconds. The stuffing temperature will rise a few degrees after the turkey is removed from the oven. If the center of the stuffing has not reached 165°F after stand time, return the turkey to the oven and continue cooking.

Inspiration, Cooking and Wine

You know on a Sunday no one should really work....with one exception, I am not going to either. And, while I have never been accused of being a master motivator (sorry, that is not my strength), I do come across some things that I like and, hey, why not share. Also, I have been accused for having a passion for good cooking and an occasional class of a good wine. So, why not share a little inspiration, food and wine.

The Paper Airplane Movie by Michael McMillan is a good little diddy that really represents what Steve Heideman and Fulcrum Investment Network are trying to accomplish and instill....thinking outside the box. Regardless of what we do, isn't it a novel idea to do some things outside the box? Anyways, hope the little diddy makes an impression.

We know we can always find good recipes by going to sites like FoodTV, but isn't it great to find a tried and true recipe from some "normal" person?! Listed below is a gumbo recipe that, while I did not create, I did modify it quite q bit. I am biased, but I think it is awesome. If Gumbo is your thing, you might also want to check out gumbocity for additional things to look at. Here you go:

2/3 Cups Flour

2/3 Cups Vegetable Oil

Mix the flour and oil together in an iron soup pot until

the roux is caramel

2 Cups Onions Add onions, celery & peppers.

1 Cup Celery

1/2 Cup Green Bell Peppers, chopped

Saute and cook until the onions are glossy

1/2 Cup Green Onion tops, chopped

1/4 Cup Parsley

4 Cloves Garlic, chopped

Add onions, parsley and garlic. Saute. Add hot water (4 cups). Stir

2 lbs. Shrimp, raw and peeled

2 Larger Cans of Crabmeat

2 Fillets of Catfish

2 Fillets of Talapia

1 lb. of Scallops....larger sized ones

1 Pint of Oysters and liquid

2-3 8oz bottles of clam juice

Add Shrimp, Crabmeat, Catfish, Talapia, Scallops, anything else you want...hey you won't ruin it.

1 and 1/2 quarts of hot water

1 Tablespoon Salt

1 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

Add hot water, salt and pepper. Cover and cook.

Remember, gumbo is supposed to be soupy and I like soups with lots of liquid. So, feel free to play with up or down with liquid to your liking.

Add can of tomatoes....hey, how much depends on you....this will give the soup both good flavor and color.

Now here is where you play.....I like to add in some Old Bay Seasoning (maybe 1 - 2 tablespoons), some Zatarain's (maybe a tablespoon) and as much or as little Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce. Remember, cook the soup down for flavor and add more liquid (fish liquid, if possible) if you want.

Now, what I do shortly before serving is I put 1 lb of shrimp in so they dont cook down into little nuggets and I put in 2 lbs of nice and clean Alaskan King Crab legs. Bring soup to a complete boil, reduce heat and be ready to serve.

Serve with Rice....white rice please.

Did anyone say wine?

For any of you who are Pinot Noir fans, I have a great recommendation. While this one is a little pricey, it is a great find. Also, you will probably have to order it (if you can get it) as this wine is typically snatched up by hotels and high end restaurants.

The Pinot in question....Pisoni Pinot Noir . If you order it, you will have to buy a case (6 bottles). I think last year's price was around$375.00. However, for those Pinot lovers our there....or even if you are not...you will get hooked in with this label.

If anyone tries the recipes I send along, please let me know. Be interested to see what people think.

The Chicago Metallic Professional Roast 'N Broil Pan with Rack Reviews.In response to my request to help the problem is immediate and simple, and my back and running within days.The Roaster Pan quickly arrived at Golda's Kitchen, but it was a mistake. I have not tried using a roasting rack comes with it, but it looks sturdy and well made and easy to keep clean. Yet I have only used the pan to bake some bread, Focaccia, and it performed perfectly and quickly clean up. I'm completely satisfied with your purchase, and looking forward to using it for many years.
I love Pan! And the pan itself and the same non-stick roasting rack coating.After wet, even the worst messes clean off easily by hand. The corners are all very smooth, so easy to clean. You can put it in the broiler and it's okay. This is not Teflon, folks.The package says, it is also Dishwasher Safe, although I have not tried this yet.
The bed, this is a nice 2-1/4 inch deep. We found that great dishes such as aloo Tarkar?t (Currie potatoes), which is more difficult to leave the crud to clean glass casseroles. You could probably substitute a 13x9 casserole for most applications, should not be used until a sharp knife to cut the Food Pan.
The product description, which suggests he could use the 'Grill the turkey for Thanksgiving' is misleading - it may also be adapted to the Thanksgiving turkey bone! Chicago Metallic makes a large Roasting Pan, which is more suitable for meat. However, family dinners, I prefer the smaller size because it allows me that in addition to another small pan to cook the dish of meat at a time. The 13 'x9' is a small saucepan. It's great for a pork tenderloin or two, roast beef eye round, cut a few pieces of chicken (about 4 thighs) or a couple quail.The size also makes it easier to rent tent with foil to pan-fried the other right. And, of course, a clean interface, which is less than in a large pot.
