Cedar Planked Fish Cooking
Cooking aboard a vessel is a delight, and can make for some fond memories. Cooking meal on board does not need to be processed meals and finger foods. Let me show you how to make a gourmet seafood meal that will impress your dinner guests on board your yacht. Planked grilled fish fillets aboard the trawler, the Patricia Ann; it's all the rage on the docks these days.
Planked grilled fish or merely cooking on a wood board is a fantastic experience; if you love the flavor and smell of smoke-cured meats, this method is for you. This technique is great as it affords you real smoke for flavor. This is particularly good if you are grilling redfish fillets, which are my favorite. As a matter of fact, legend has it that this method to cooking on a grill was discovered as a result of cooking chef's trial and error. But I speculate you could cook almost anything this way. I prefer to call this way to cook planked grilled fish fillets. Salmon and Mahi baked on cedar are my favorites. You can get the recipes for each of the fish at our recipe page at our website.
So how do you go about it? To start you will need to find some clean cedar wood boards, Lowes and Home Depot have it in their building materials departments. But you’ll have to cut it into the right sizes to use. But you can also buy it prepacked to use at most large grocery chains or you can order on the Internet.
Most often I use cedar, but many other woods like alder and maple are also available. Using a smooth, untreated piece of wood about one half inch thick and big enough to hold the fish pieces soak the wood in water for several hours prior to use. I like to use a section about 6 x 6 for the 2 of us. Although any wood can be used, just make certain that there are no chemicals on the lumber.
When prepared, get your gas grill going. I use a Magma Catalina model gas grill on my vessel so this article is written using that method. To prevent your fish fillets from sticking to the plank, coat the wood with Olive Oil. You do no flipping or turning when plank fish cooking. The fish will be slowly cooked from the bottom up. Feel free to season the fish fillets as you like, there are some good recipes on the web page.
We all know that wood burns. We are now going to position the plank with the fish on the lower grill surface and set the control to high. If you see that the plank has caught fire while you are cooking, it's ok, it’s the way we want the plank with fish to cook. Give it a squirt with water to help put out the fire. But let it ignite a little around the sides; the smoldering of the scorched plank is what makes the smoke that flavors the fish.
I always allow about fifty percent more food preparation time versus regular grilling when I am plank cooking. During the preparation time you can baste the fish with flavourings if desired.
Once the fish is done I transfer the fish fillets from the seared board with a spatula or you can just slide the fish fillets off onto a plate with a fork. Be sure to turn off the grill and let the used board sit until later to permit it to cool before disposal.
Plank grilling is truly is a fantastic way to prepare fish fillets. The smoking adds to the flavors and aromas of any recipe so feel free to try various ideas.

How to Make Your Own Power Living Off the Grid
Making your own power and living off the grid is actually much easier than most people think. For some reason just the promt at the mere idea of an undertaking of such a project seems to imply complexities to most. There are several methods for creating off grid energy all of which are very easy to implement. The only really important component is the power source itself. Important and very necessary. The methods that will be discussed in this article uses the wind and the sun as the power sources. These power sources are considered renewable power sources because they are continuous and everlasting and don't need any type of interaction from man to work.
The most common type of sun activated energy source is very familiar to most people. Solar energy is the energy source being referred to. Solar energy is created from photovoltiac cells which are activated when the sun's rays are directly on them. Each one of these cells producess very little energy alone and would do very little by way of making enough energy to power a home, however when many of them are grouped together, making up what is better known as solar panels, the energy created is astounding and creates enough energy to power appliances, lights, and just about anything else that a home owner or outdoorsman wishes to operate. Solar panels while are expensive if purchased from a retail store are not all that difficult to build at home and at a very small fraction of the cost of retail solar panels.
The second energy source is wind energy. Wind energy is the most popular type of renewable energy and it is used to turn a propeller which activates a generator that creates electricity much in the very same way as an automobile creates power to keep it's battery charged. In order to use this method in a living off the grid setting the generator is mounted 50-60 feet off the ground for the best results inside a shell with a propeller on it's exterior to catch the wind. A wind generator is not at all complicated to make and instructions on what you need for parts and how to figure out out just what you'll need comes with kit plans. The parts for generators are few and are easy to come by. The entire procedure may take an average person a couple of days to do after all parts are rounded up with most set ups.
For the novice or anyone, for that matter, who wishes to build their own homemade wind generator to start producing their own off the grid energy there are plans available that are very specific that also have easy to read text tutorials and or video tutorials that will allow you to build your own generator. Usually there is some type of support in place to ensure that your build goes without a hitch. Living off the grid energy is fast becoming the way of the future for powering homes and large factories too. It is a great way to help the environment, save tremendously on power bills, gives home owners incentives like tax breaks by way of tax credits and rebates, and they are a good way to increase property value.

Carne de Santa Maria Tri-Tip Recipe
Ingredients
1 tablespoon salt
1 / 2 teaspoon black pepper
1 / 2 teaspoon garlic salt
1 top sirloin (3 "thick) or tri-tip
Red oak logs, or charcoal and oak chips (soaked in water)
Method
Combine salt, pepper and garlic salt together and rub it over the meat mixture.
Place hog and adjust its position for sites around 2 or 3 inches of coal and a heat source.
Sear each side of the meat over the coals 5 8 minutes to seal in juices, turning once only.
Now return to the position the meat to fall about 6-8 inches from heat source. Cook meat for another 20 to 30 minutes, turning every 7 or 8 minutes until the meat is cooked to desired degree of doneness.
Allow meat to rest on paper Aluminum for 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
Tri-Tip events
In the U.S., Tri-Tips were ground generally for up, or cut into fillets, until the early 1960s when it became synonymous with Santa Maria, CA, as a local specialty food.
Tri-Tips were, and still today, is rubbed with a mixture of spices or dry rub, which includes salt, pepper and other seasonings like garlic salt. The meat is then cooked and smoked over a pit of red oak wood, or more commonly, on a spit, barbecue, grilled or in a large cooking vessel with lid.
Even today, Tri-Tip steak is still known as the Santa Maria steak.
This cut is very versatile in how they prepare.
The traditional Santa Maria style of the kitchen is the grill to simmer over a pit of red oak, but the tri-tip can be slow, smoked, marinated or seasoned with a rub dry.
The Tri-Tip is cooked over high heat on a grill, a grill, or in an oven after the meat has been cooked is usually sliced across the grain before serving.
Doneness-Tip Tri temperature guide
Rare (Red with the middle of cold, soft) - 125 to 130 degrees
Medium Rare (Red with warm water, some hard core) - 135-140 degrees
Medium (pink and firm throughout) - 140-150 degrees
Centre for Medium and (pink line, very firm) - 150 to 155 degrees
Well done (gray-brown and all completely firm) 160-165 degrees
I never get tired of eating like this Tri-Tip steak is simply fantastic served on your own, or a barbecue sauce with guts. Once you've smoked Tri-Tip and I enjoyed it, chances are you are already anticipating the next Once you have it!

The Constitution for Dummies (i.e. Ron Paul Supporters)
I will freely admit that I did a bad, bad thing last week. Well, it wasn’t a really “bad” thing unless you were one of those that fell for it I guess. What did I do that was so bad? I set up the Paulbots. Yes, evil rotten me, I know.
When I wrote “Earmarking Our Way to Oblivion” I purposefully left out any mention of Ron Paul even though I knew he was just as dirty as all the rest. See, Mr. Paul’s own earmark fetish was certainly no real secret to anyone paying attention and with enough desire to dig a little. But the Paulbots were quick to comment about how because of the corruption that earmarks bring and how that they many times violate the Constitutional powers of Congress that this is exactly the reason why we needed Ron Paul.
Not a day goes by that supporters of Ron Paul aren’t out in droves proclaiming any conservative that does not support their candidate is an evil neo-con, trumpeting how Mr. Paul is a true “constitutionalist” and is the only man qualified to be President. Well, I guess we now see how accurate their description of their own golden boy really is considering news that has really taken off in the last couple days about his own requests for earmarks.
It is no secret to those of us that are out there everyday taking fire from the Paulbots that when Ron Paul commands them to jump they not only ask how high, but also at what angle, what flavor of Kool Aid Mr. Paul would desire they bring him after they land, how many ice cubes he would like in said drink, what color he would like his house painted, how many gallons of gas he needs them to put in his car, what time he would like his wakeup call for the following morning, how he desires his eggs cooked and whether or not he wants them to polish his fine silver clockwise or counterclockwise. The answer to that last one is that Ron Paul demands they first polish it six times clockwise followed by a single counterclockwise finishing polish. Their loyalty to the illusion of their candidate as a savior of us all and as someone that actually holds the Constitution dear is admirable if not highly misguided and naive.
Now the Wall Street Journal and other sources have what Paulbots are robotically and predictably calling a “hit pieces” on their candidate. Of course I still question whether or not Ron Paul really can be considered a “candidate” when he barely cracks one percent in the polls. But that is another topic for another day. Anyway these “hit pieces” detail how Mr. Paul, supposedly a libertarian, has requested millions of taxpayer dollars for roles not delegated to the federal government by we the people. Hardly a “libertarian” stance. Hardly “hit pieces”. Simply the truth.
Oh ... well ... uh ... Ron Paul 2008! He’s still the man! Right Paulbots?
Last week the Paulbots were flooding me with comments about how we needed Ron Paul and about how I was right about the earmark problem. But this week I have particularly loved the responses by these same hacks to these new revelations and that have again flooded into my mailbox on cue since I blogged about Paul’s own earmarks on Tuesday. They say things like, “Well the money was going to be spent anyway!” and, “It’s ok because he is just serving his constituents like he is supposed to,” or boldly proclaim, “there is nothing unconstitutional about Paul’s earmarks!” or my personal favorite, “Well, yeah he requested the earmarks but he voted against them!”
That last one makes me chuckle. It’s a pathetic having your cake and eating it too argument that no true libertarian would embrace. Anyone with half a brain sees through this tactic as nothing but style over substance worthy of the staunchest liberals. Mr. Paul certainly understands that in the current corrupt Washington culture his earmark requests would pass even as he votes against them. He knows all he has to do is attach them to the spending bill in order to reap the benefits. A true libertarian would not even request them in the first place.
But rather than calling for his impeachment for violating the constitution, something I have done time and again for all politicians, regardless of party, that violate the Constitution, the Paulbots rush out to defend the man they have deemed as “the one.” Truth be damned! He really is a TRUE libertarian! Full ludicrous speed ahead!
It doesn’t matter that they were out there in mass decrying earmarks just a week before. It doesn’t matter that the Constitution is clear in Article I, Section 8 when it limits the powers of Congress to tax and spend on a concise list of things defined as the “general Welfare.” It doesn’t mater if Ron Paul has requested federal money to deal with issues found nowhere in these federal powers from funding for shrimp to building hospitals to maintaining trolleys. None of that matters because ... well ... Ron Paul is da man! Praise the Savior of our Republic! Hallelujah! And how dare I and others take his name in vain!
Blind loyalty is never attractive. And it is often deadly.
The Constitution is simple. It allows for laws and spending on the only a short list of topics which are clearly stated and any libertarian worth their salt knows of James Madison’s discussion of this in Federalist 41. The list that is there is the list. That’s it Mr. Paul. That’s it Paulbots. Nothing about shrimp. Nothing about trolleys. Nothing about most of what Paul’s earmarks are spending money on. No amount of whining about Ron Paul getting caught with his hand in the Cookie Jar will change the facts. No amount of hurling slurs like “neo-con” or “fascist” or “globalist” at those that exposed Mr. Paul will make a difference in the truth. Such tactics don’t work for liberals and they will not work for you.
I’m sorry I entrapped you last week. But it is something you are going to learn from as you progress on in life. Principles are only principles if you are willing to put your money where your mouth is and always watch your own glass house before you cast the first stone.
It’s so simple even a Paulbot can understand it. And I call on Ron Paul to be a true libertarian and draw up articles of impeachment against himself, convince his fellow Congressmen to approve the action and finally vote in favor of the action when the time comes to pay the piper.
But he won’t. He won’t because the fact is there are few true libertarians out here in the real world. We are a lonely bunch for sure. Even though lots of people envision themselves as such, when push comes to show they are at best nothing more than a bastard cousin; the liberaltarian. And that is why we are in trouble.

Each Sandstone Coaster is a Work of Art
The wide variety of artwork you can have on a sandstone coaster makes it possible for you to have many different works of art in your home. Sandstone is a porous stone that took millions of years to form.
There are many different colors evident in each stone due to the formation process and these vibrant colors come to life in the coasters made from it. If you want the actual photo displayed, you do have to make sure that the photo you send via email is in high resolution. This is an elegant way of displaying photos of children and grandchildren on the coffee table for all to see.
A sandstone coaster has cork backing to prevent the stone from scratching the tabletop. Sometimes a glass will stick to the coaster because of the liquid and this sends the coaster crashing to the table or the floor when you lift the glass.
You won't have this problem with coasters made of sandstone because the liquid seeps into the coaster leaving the surface dry. These coasters are very easy to clean with a damp cloth and you will only have to give them a scrubbing if you notice a stain on one or two of them. They will last for generations and will likely become family heirlooms.

Mom's Turkey Stuffing Recipe With Sausage and Apple
We have a big gathering at our house every Thanksgiving. Planning the meal is the first place to start. Here is a typical menu for our feast: deviled eggs, cheese tray, pumpkin, dip, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, broccoli-cauliflower gratin, sweet potatoes, creamed corn, fruit salad, rolls and pies. Luckily everyone likes to bring a dish! Even more fun is selecting the wine. I like to include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition we also have a some beer, sodas, and lemonade on hand. Preparing as much as you can ahead of time is the key to actually enjoying the day and getting to spend time with family.
Every Thanksgiving my family looks forward to the homemade stuffing. My mom made it for years and has now passed the recipe down for my brother to make.
TURKEY STUFFING - SAUSAGE & APPLE
6 cups freshly crumbled french bread
1 pound pork sausage meat (without casing)
2 medium onions diced
1 cup celery diced
2 cups apples diced
2 eggs slightly beaten
2 tbsp poultry seasoning
1 tsp thyme
1/4 cup melted butter
2 cups turkey stock (or more)
Tear apart french bread into breadcrumbs. Place on baking sheet and toast at 350 degrees in the oven. Brown sausage meat and set aside. Saute onions and celery in meat fat until soft, not brown. In large mixing bowl combine bread, apples, sausage meat, onions, celery, slightly beaten eggs. Add poultry seasoning. Salt and pepper to taste. Mix well. Add melted butter and turkey stock to moisten as desired.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Add turkey juices as desired. Or stuff in turkey and it can cook with the bird!

Eat Fiber and prevent constipation
To have regular bowel movements and escape constipation you need to eat more fiber. Fiber Raw vegetables and fruits is better for you than fiber from grains. Why? Raw vegetables and fruits are live foods with enzymes, minerals, vitamins and many antioxidants that are electrically charged. They have a magnetic energy that is absorbed by DNA. So most of this source of fiber and less grain.
Do not forget to water. If you do not get enough water during the day, your body will take water out of your stool in the colon and make your stools hard. Drink a minimum of 3 glasses a day of drinking pure water and work up to 5-6.
This is where you need to do some "fiber work." You need to increase their consumption fiber to about 40 to 60 mg or more. Yes it is a lot. In the past, I recommended 35mg of fiber, but this is an average. Do you want more than the average. Here are some foods high in fiber. Add to your eating habits so they do not constipated. Fiber does much more in your colon to do it ordinary
° Combine with toxins and moves them out in the stool
· It combines heavy metal and moves them out in the stool
Of combinations with cholesterol and bile and prevents them from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
Helps prevent colon cancer and other diseases of the colon.
° flooding keeps your colon walls strong and healthy by not allowing toxins to accumulate there.
° Clean the colon walls and pulls toxins from the colon pockets and holes.
The following foods provide 3 grams of fiber. Add a variety of these foods to your daily diet to get more fiber in your eating habits. Start eating these foods little by little getting used to eating fiber levels.
• 1 / 3 cup prunes
• 2 slices whole wheat bread
• 1 / 2 cup pumpkin cooked winter
• 1 / 2 cup cooked fresh peas
• 1 / 2 cup beans or pinto beans, or cowpeas
• 1 cup cooked barley, 1 1 / 2 Coffee Cup rice, 1 cup millet
• 3 corn tortillas
• 1 1 / 2 cup of spaghetti, 1 / 3 cup spinach spaghetti
· 1 / 6 cup 100% bran, 1 / 2 cup cream of wheat
• 1 cup applesauce, 1 cup of sliced apples, 1 / 2 cup banana, 1 / 2 cup figs
• 1 fruit salad cup, 1 cup of prune juice, 1 ounce raisins
• 1 / 2 avocado
• 1 cup blueberries, 3 / 4 cup blueberries
· 1 / 3 cup guava, 1 kiwifruit, 1 / 2 of a mango, 2 nectarines, 1 / 3 papaya
• 1 orange, 1 cup sliced peaches, 1 cup pear slices, 1 / 2 khaki
• 1 1 / 2 cup pineapple, 1 cup strawberries
• 1 / 2 cup raisins, 3 / 4 cup coconut
• 1 / 2 cup rhubarb, 1 / 3 cup hearts Artichoke
· 1.2 ounces of almonds, 1 / 2 oz sesame seeds 1 / 3 cup sunflower seeds
• 1 / 4 cup of baby lima beans, 1 / 7 cup of beans black, 1 cup green beans
• 1 / 4 cup kidney, pinto, white or navy beans, 1 / 3 cup lentils
• 1 / 2 cup of broccoli 1 / 2 cup sprouts, 1 cup cabbage
• 2 carrots, 1 / 2 cup carrot juice
• 1 cup cauliflower, celery 5
• 1 cup of spinach, 1 cup mustard greens

How do you know when you're starting to have a lot fiber in your diet? When you are getting enough fiber in your diet, your stools weigh less and float on the water in your toilet.
