The Campers Guide to Solar Cooking

Let’s be honest, not everyone loves camping.  It’s a very “love-it-or-hate-it” type of thing, and some people just plain hate it.  There are varying degrees of campers too. From the people who drive their RV and occasionally walk through woods, to people who bring a sleeping bag and figure everything else out when they get there.  Believe it or not, solar cooking is helpful no matter what kind of camper you are or aren’t. In a myriad of ways, a solar cooker is ideal. From not having to build a campfire, to cooking what you catch, to pasteurizing water to make it safe to drink, a solar cooker can provide all you need to have a satisfying camp cooking experience.

Who likes building a campfire?  I know some people do (to be honest, I’m one of them), but most just don’t like all the effort.  Even for those of us that do, there are times when it’s just not practical.  Let’s say you just hiked a mile to the best fishing spot, but it was still 3 hours before you caught anything.  Do you really feel like foraging for wood, having to light it, and fighting with the wind?  I’m sure the answer to this for most would be a big NO.  That’s when you pull out a light solar oven, throw your cleaned fish in, and take a nap.  That’s really all there is to it, the sunlight will heat the oven up to roughly 275 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, so even though it isn’t as hot as a campfire would be, it will still cook quickly.  All that and with no need to find dry wood, find kindling, dig a pit, or build a circle of rocks.  No fire safety issues either as the sides are cool to the touch.  The only real question is, what can you cook in it?

You can literally cook almost anything with a solar oven.  Let’s take that fishing story as an example.  Because the oven is about 300 degrees, it will cook a whole fish in less than 2 hours.  While that may seem slow, remember all the work you’re avoiding.  No tending to the fire, no making sure the little ones are too close to the fire (or throwing stuff into it), you just put the fish in and go do something else.  Don’t want to wait that long?  If you filet the fish first, the filets will take less than half an hour (assuming the oven is preheated or set up for about 20 minutes first).  Even more fun is that the oven’s relatively low temperature (from a cooking standpoint) will make it pretty difficult to dry out the fish which is every fisherman’s nightmare when it comes time to bite in.  As cool as all this is, your solar oven has an even more important use. Any idea what that is?

I’ll give you a hint: 70% of your body is made up of it.  That’s right, water.  Just set up your solar oven, fill a metal pot with water, and leave it in to boil for at least 10 minutes.  Now, don’t misunderstand.  If the water is chemically contaminated in some way, boiling the water won’t help.  Boiling only kills the natural bacteria that would make you sick.  So just make sure there’s no industrial waste by your water supply and you should be fine.

I think that that is a pretty amazing range of uses for something that weighs only ten pounds. Developing Skills with Pretend Play Toys

How many times do you look over and see a child involved in pretend play? Children from a very young age engage in spirited and fun pretend play. This can be anything from using a pencil as a magic wand to whipping up something in their toy kitchen. Pretend play is instrumental in developing many key skills in young children.

When a child is engaging in pretend play, some of the skills being developed are social and emotional skills. Getting the opportunity to act like someone else teaches him/her to walk in someone else’s shoes. Letting them experience how others are possibly feeling. Also there is a give in take when switching up roles that is great for the child to learn about taking turns.

One of the most important things a child learns is cognitive thinking skills. This is a skill that will benefit them not only now but for a lifetime. It’s what allows them to find creative solutions to problems. The skill of processing the information that attain. And as an adult good problem solving skills are a bonus in both work and interpersonal relationships.

Pretend play brings the imagination out in all of us. Studies have shown that kids that regularly are engaged in pretend play later on in life have much higher levels of narrative expression, allowing them to really be able to communicate on a higher level.

So many times it’s fun to listen in as your child engages in pretend play. Some of the vocabulary will amaze you. You will often find yourself and words and phrases you often say coming out of their mouths. Using this pretend play he is learning to use his vocabulary to tell a story. In life this will help his go from spoken word to written word easier.

Pretend play also teaches kids to adapt and use what they have at hand. Watching a kid pick up a block to use as a phone or putting blocks on plates as food in their toy kitchen are all ways kids learn abstract thinking. The ability to use random objects to get them what they need is priceless as a lifetime skill.

Pretend play is so important that in virtually all young learning centers you will see a corner devoted to it. There you will often find many education toys that with imagination can be anything. Often you will also see toy kitchens which are one of the most popular ways to spark that pretend play. Wooden toys also serve as great props. Anything that inspires pretend play is a great addition to a young child or even older ones toy collections.

With the invention of video games, and all sorts of high tech toys pretend play has taken a back burner; and it is really sad. Pretend play brings inspires to kids to dream to be anything they wish. It allows them to pick up wooden toys and become a princess or a knight. Pretend play allows them to spend an afternoon cooking up your favorite dish on their toy kitchen. Halloween Who Am I?

When each kid arrives at the party, stick a name tag on their back with the name of something related to Halloween night written on it like (witch cats pumpkin etc.) Each child must guess what it says. This is done by asking other guests 'yes' or 'no' questions about what the paper says. If a correct answer is given, they win a prize.

Pumpkin Bowling Ghosts

Items needed: 3 small pumpkins, 30 empty 2 liter clear plastic pop bottles, 1 tin white spray paint, permanent black marker and a bag of gravel or pebbles.

Spray paint the pop bottles white. Allow the paint to dry and draw a ghost face on each bottle and add some sand or pebbles to weight each bottle down. Separate the kids into teams... line them up and let them take turns at bowling over the Ghosts! The small pumpkins are the bowling balls.

Spooky Walk Items needed: Cut out pictures, craft supplies, music

The spooky walk is similar to musical chairs but not as aggressive (pushing and shoving) Cut out pumpkins, witches, ghosts, broomsticks, scarecrows, cauldrons and ghouls, and other Halloween features and symbols you can think of.. You'll need 1 item per child participating. Place the cut outs in a circle on the floor. You'll need some haunting spooky music to play. Have your children walk around in a circle stepping or standing beside or on the picture cut outs while the spooky music is playing, and then at random intervals stop the music and everyone freezes by the item next to them. Then from a hat pick out the name of one of the cut outs that match those on the floor. On every round a picture is removed and the child with no spooky picture to stand by when the music stops will have to sit out the rest of the game. Carry on with until there is only one child left who will be the winner.

Candy Corn Catch

Items needed: Candy corn, plastic pumpkins and string.

Divide the children into groups of 3 teams, 3-4 per team depending on how many kids are at the party. The Candy Corn Catch game will have the players toss candy corns from about 7 to 10 feet away into a pumpkin that will be tied around a team member's waist. Each player will have the same amount of candy corn. The child wearing the pumpkin can move around to try to catch the candy corn as it is thrown. Once everyone has thrown the candy corn, take the pumpkin and count how many went in so a winner can be picked. This is determined on how many candy corns are in the pumpkin. Pick up any corn that missed the target from the floor to avoid accidents.

When playing games safety is major concern. Some kids are prone to accidents so have a first aid kit close to hand to fix up scrapes and grazes (plasters, bandages, and antiseptic cream.) Have an emergency contact number you can call in case something more serious happens.

The Tragic Witch, Halloween Story Game

Items needed: cooked spaghetti or cooked cauliflower, peeled tomato, peeled grapes, popcorn kernels, baby carrots, spam, pen and paper, bags or basins

To play the game you need to be in a darkened room (not pitch black.)Dim the lights or use candles, think about safety when using candles. Before telling the story about the Tragic Witch who apparently died in an accident...explain to the kids they are to be the investigators. The children will have to identify the remains found at the scene of the accident. In a bag you will have the items mentioned above. The bag will be passed around and the kids without them peeking inside where they will be asked to guess the parts of the witch's body inside the bag, and write them down.

Eyeball Eggs

Ingredients:

Hard boiled eggs

Cream cheese

Stuffed olives

Tomato sauce

Remove yolks from halved eggs and mash with cream cheese. Refill the white gap with the mashed mixture and add an olive (eye ball). Dip a cocktail stick in the tomato ketchup and draw squiggly lines on the whites to make them look blood shot.

Witchy Ice Cream

Ingredients:

Mint ice cream (green)

Ice cream cones

Smarties

Strawberry laces.

Scoop a ball of ice cream onto a plate and put strawberry laces on top for hair, use the wafer cone for a hat, and the smarties for eyes & nose and a lace string for the mouth.

Ingredients:

375g unsweetened cooking chocolate

1 handful marshmallows

15g butter

450g rice crispies

Melt 25g of the chocolate in a basin over a pot of hot water. Add marshmallows and stir until melted then add butter. Add rice crispies to the chocolate and marshmallows and stir to coat evenly. Allow to cool and shape into eight cones shapes. Flatten the large end to make a wide brim. Allow to cool and stiffen. Melt the rest of the chocolate. Dip the cones into the chocolate. Place on tinfoil to cool and harden.

Goodie bags should contain better goodies like a mini toothbrush and tube of tooth paste to clean their teeth after their slap up meal of devilish yummies.

Tips To Cook On Microwave Ovens Safely For Fearless Eating

Experts say that a number of cases of irritable bowel syndrome, food poison and other illnesses bred by food products are caused by our faulty cooking habits on microwaves ovens, once supposed to be one of the safest kitchen appliances.

However, a microwave oven is still the safest and user-friendly kitchen appliance. So how these ailments arise? Definitely, it is not our microwave oven itself, but it is our faulty method of cooking which has to be blamed. So next time when you switch on your oven to cook something delicious, kindly, for your tummy's sake, do the following. Otherwise you will run for your life holding your potbelly in both hands towards a doctor's clinic.

Remember, our goal is to ensure that no part of the food should remain 'uncooked.' It is these uncooked portions of a dish which carry living germs and bacteria which cause trouble inside the stomach once you eat up the food, most importantly no-veg dishes.

The first and foremost comes the proper cleaning of the oven. A dirty microwave oven, even partially, may hamper the cooking process. How a germ-ridden thing can cook something healthy?

Cooking meat on low heat is the real formula. First chop it into small pieces and cook them giving no more than 30-40 percent of heat. This way the pieces are easily and safely cooked and the heat reaches the innermost part. Thus all the harmful organisms are killed in the oven.

If cooking some bigger pieces of the meat is important, then cooking in a cooking bag is helpful. It generates enough heat and steam and distributes them evenly to all the parts of the pieces so no germs or bacteria is left. Avoid higher degree of heat. Use 45-55 percent of the maximum.

A microwave oven is supposed to be a good preserver of the taste and flavor of the food too. So use salt and other herbs etc only half the actual amount you use while cooking in a conventional oven.

Many times we use microwave ovens and electric grills both to make a dish. Thus we cook it for moments only in an oven. Do your grill work quickly as soon as you pull out the half-cooked meat, otherwise the germs go more destructive. Never let the half-cooked pieces cool down.

For better and faster cooking you can consider using liquid in the food. You save almost 30 percent of energy and time too. Fatty meat too cooks fast. A pound of meat takes no more than six minutes to cook. Thus you keep adding six more minutes for each pound of meat you add.

If you don't prefer to cook in a cooking bag, then keep the pieces of the meat in a mid-size bowl and use a lid to cover it. However, avoid an airtight covering. Allow the steam to billow out. Stir the food once or twice giving intervals before you finally switch off. Stirring distributes the heat evenly.

To cover the bowl, plastic wrap can be another suitable option instead of a lid. However, refrain from using metallic foils. They may spoil the food. Also while cooking pieces of various sizes, keep the bigger pieces beneath the smaller ones. Cooking becomes easy.
